The process of using a rivet gun involves three key components: the rivet itself, the workpieces to be joined, and the rivet gun. The rivet consists of a cylindrical shaft with a head on one end and a tail on the other. The workpieces are positioned together, and the rivet is inserted through aligned holes in the materials.

Here is our step by step process on how to use our Milwaukee rivet gun:

Step 1: Choose the right rivet – The first step is to select the appropriate rivet size and material for the specific application. Consider factors such as the thickness of the materials being joined and the expected load on the joint.

Step 2: Prepare the workpieces – Drill holes in the materials to be joined, ensuring that they are perfectly aligned. The diameter of the holes should match the size of the rivet being used.

Step 3: Insert the rivet – Place the rivet through the holes in the materials, ensuring that the head is on the side where the force will be applied. The tail should protrude from the other side.

Step 4: Set the rivet – With the rivet in place, the rivet gun is positioned on the tail of the rivet. Squeeze the trigger, and the rivet gun will drive the tail into the rivet’s shaft, causing it to expand and secure the materials together.

Step 5: Cut or flatten the tail – Once the rivet is set, the excess tail can be cut or flattened, depending on the type of rivet used. The joint is now secure and permanent.

What Is A Rivet Gun?

A rivet gun is a hand-held mechanical tool specifically designed for installing rivets (metal fasteners) Rivets are commonly used to join two or more pieces of material together, such as metal, plastic, or even wood. Unlike screws or bolts, rivets form a permanent bond once installed.

Our Milwaukee M18 rivet gun has 20kN of pulling force for fast installation of high strength blind rivets in all materials. This cordless pop riveter eliminates the need for hoses and compressors and has been designed to withstand harsh shop or assembly plant environments

Where To Use A Rivet Gun

Heavy duty rivet guns are widely used in construction, automotive, aerospace and manufacturing industries, this versatile tool offers numerous advantages that make it indispensable for various applications.

Aerospace: Rivet guns are extensively used in the aerospace industry to join aircraft components, such as fuselage panels, wing sections, and interior fittings. The high strength and reliability of riveted joints make them suitable for critical aircraft structures.

Automotive: In the automotive sector, rivet guns are employed to assemble body panels, frames, and other structural components. They are particularly valuable in applications where welding or adhesive bonding is not practical or desirable.

Construction: Riveting is still used in construction, especially for steel structures, bridges, and heavy machinery. Electric rivet guns help securely fasten beams, girders, and other structural elements.

Shipbuilding: The maritime industry relies on rivet guns to build ships and boats, ensuring robust connections between metal plates and frames.

Manufacturing: Riveting is widely used in manufacturing industries for various products, such as furniture, appliances, trailers, and HVAC systems.

Railways: Rail carriages, locomotives, and other railway infrastructure often use cordless rivet guns to assemble and maintain components.

Defence and Military: The defence industry uses rivet guns for assembling military equipment, vehicles, and structures that require high strength and reliability.

Consumer Goods: Riveting is employed in the production of consumer goods like luggage, sporting equipment, and household items.

These industries benefit from the advantages of rivet guns, including the ability to create strong joints, resistance to vibration and thermal distortion, and increased productivity due to quick and efficient assembly processes. While other fastening methods such as welding, bolting, and adhesive bonding have their places, rivet guns remain a preferred choice in many applications due to their reliability and versatility.

Advantages Of A Rivet Gun

Strength and Durability: Rivets create a robust joint that can withstand high loads, making them ideal for applications where a long-lasting and sturdy connection is required.

Vibration Resistance: Unlike threaded fasteners that may loosen over time due to vibration, rivets provide a more reliable and secure connection, making them well-suited for heavy machinery and automotive applications.

No Thermal Distortion: Riveting does not involve heat, so it is particularly beneficial when working with heat-sensitive materials or in situations where welding is impractical.

Quick and Efficient: Rivet guns allow for rapid installation, enhancing productivity in assembly lines and large-scale manufacturing processes.

Versatility: Rivets can be used to join various materials, including metals, plastics, and composites, providing flexibility across different industries and applications.

How Much Is A Rivet Gun
